Breakfast at Piccolo Café

There is a tiny little café in one of the loveliest squares of the 6th district in Budapest that brings a real authentic Italian atmosphere into the life of local people. This is Piccolo Café where “nomen est omen” aka the name says it all. 🙂 It is really a miniature coffee shop with only 3 table-for-2 upstairs on the intimate gallery. When the weather is nice, 2 very small tables flank the entrance on the tiny outdoor seating area. Nonetheless, they have everything for a perfect breakfast.

The 2 young owners, Sára and Attila, do a great job in this friendly café. I think their philosophy might be “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. Their menu is simple but great at a reasonable price. They have fresh juices and smoothies, hot chocolate :), different sandwiches and the top two Italian specialties: panini, the grilled sandwich, and piadina, the famous flatbread from the Emilia-Romagna region.

And of course, there is croissant on the menu, because a freshly baked croissant and a strong espresso are a must in the morning. 🙂 Beside the traditional sweet pastries, Sára bakes paleo cookies and cakes in house.

Although I’m a big coffee fan and addicted to espresso it was time to expand my comfort zone. So I decided to go for a piccolo latte which is a ristretto shot topped with warm, silky milk. It’s actually a baby latte because it is served in a 100 ml small latte glass. They use Danesi Caffe gourmet coffee beans for their espresso based drinks.

I swear to God that this piccolo latte was one of the best coffee drinks in my entire life. This little caffeinated milk shot lets you taste your fresh roasted coffee with milk. It is just heavenly. Just like in Italy. 🙂 Beside my piccolo latte I tried a toasted croissant filled with ham and cheese, and my husband tried a toasted panini with smoked ham. We both agreed that they were fresh and yummy, hot-melted breakfast specialties.

All in all, it’s a great way to start your day here. When you don’t have time to sit down in the rush morning hours, you can eat their sandwiches and stuffs on the go. For more information please check the facebook page of Piccolo Café
