Jewish Cultural Heritage in Budapest

jewish-heritage-imageBudapest has the largest Jewish community in Central Europe, with an active religious, artistic and historical Jewish heritage. Through centuries the Hungarian and Jewish history has been intertwined. Hungarian Jews played and are also playing today an important role in the country’s economical, cultural and political life.

Since 1995 we show to Budapest visitors the Hungarian and Jewish culture in our country.  Our well trained guides have the necessary qualifications to help you understand the Jewish past and present in Budapest and in Hungary. Tours are organized in two languages (English and German). We try to keep the sightseeing tours with small groups of guests.

Grand Tour (3,5 – 4 hours)

This tour was created for those, who would like to get an overview of the past and present of the Hungarian Jewry and would like to understand the differences between our main religious wings. With the help of our English/German speaking guides, you will be acquainted with the most important chapters of the history and culture of the Hungarian Jewish community.

We will visit the Synagogue triangle, which shows the different looks of the Jewish culture in Budapest. The tour includes an interior visit to the Dohany Street Synagogue, which is the largest in Europe and a local guided tour in the Jewish Museum, which has an important and unique collection of art pieces from Hungary and Eastern Europe. You will see The Martyrs’ Cemetery, where thousands of WWII victims were buried. Our next stop will be the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park with the Tree of Life which was created to remind us of those, who perished in the Holocaust. We pass by the Heroes’ Temple, built in the memory of the Jewish soldiers who gave their lives for Austria-Hungary during WWI.

The first part of the Grand Tour includes the whole Essential Tour (Madách Square, Rumbach Street Synagogue, Dohany Street Synagogue, Jewish Museum, Martyrs’ Cemetery, Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park, Tree of Life, Heroes’ Temple, Jewish Center).

After a break we will continue our walk through the Jewish Quarter, on the streets of the former Ghetto, which hosts synagogues, monuments, kosher restaurants, and kosher shops. While your guide tells you important facts and local stories of this area, you will also get basic information about Budapest. Through our journey, we will visit the Memorial Park dedicated to Carl Lutz, who is also known as „Hungary’s Schindler”, then we pass by the famous Gozsdu Passage. The third station of the Synagogue Triangle is an interior visit to the Kazinczy Street Synagogue, which is one of the largest operating orthodox synagogues in Europe, built in art-nouveau style. At the end of the tour, you have two options: you can accept our invitation to have a cake in the glatt kosher Fröhlich confectionery or you can receive 10% discount in the glatt kosher Carmel restaurant.
